Loss or Creative Reinvention?

By Roger Bennett

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), December 2004

Bennett responds to Cohen's article, "Toward Another Diaspora Manifesto" in this issue of Sh'ma, calling Cohen's claim that the North American Diaspora is flourishing wishful thinking. He asserts that American Jewry is averse to experiments must find new movements, emphases, and paradigms. However, he says, our reality is loaded with possibility, and if we are bold, innovative, and self-confident enough, our generation can make the Diaspora flourish: By creating a platform for honest debate without assumptions, supporting innovation, and fostering a culture of experimentation, we can help construct the meaningful communities that young Jews crave, and the action and values the world beyond ourselves so badly needs.
