Israel is dear to the hearts of the vast majority of American Jews. It continues to evoke a sense of Jewish pride, it continues to generate a sense of commitment and along with the Holocaust it serves as a central symbol around which Jews throughout the world unite. Nevertheless, there is a sense among informed observers that a growing number of American Jews feel increasingly distant from Israel.
