The Need to Invest in Jewish Day Schools

By Josh Elkin

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Winter 2010

In 1997 when the visionary leaders of UJA-Federation of New York joined forces with the founders of the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), they redefined the relationship between federations and Jewish day schools. This decision was a radical departure from the traditional funder-agency dynamic and reflected a revolutionary conception of what it meant for a federation to support Jewish day schools as an investment in long-term community vitality. Daring to imagine a national role for a regional organization, UJA-Federation of New York's leaders had the courage to partner with individual entrepreneurial philanthropists, some of whom had limited involvement with the federation world. The blending of UJA-Federation communal funds and individual private gifts led to the creation of a new platform for support for Jewish day schools. In joining PEJE, UJA-Federation ensured that federations had a voice at the table when it came to Jewish day school education. Given that New York has long been the epicenter of Jewish life in North America (if only by dint of the massive Jewish population residing in the metropolitan area since the late 19th century), it is not surprising that day school education grew up, as it were, alongside UJA-Federation of New York.
