Giving a Building Its Soul: Art as an Expression of Values, Mission, Vision, and Heritage

Of all the issues facing John Ruskay when he became CEO of UJA-Federation of New York in 1999, one of the most challenging was the fate of the 17-story building that had been the organization's headquarters for nearly fi ve decades. A crumbling facade, worn-out infrastructure, and lack of compliance with modern codes presented a diffi cult and expensive decision: renovate or move. The state of the building had nothing to do with caring for those in need and the future of the Jewish people - or did it? After an exhaustive study led by some of New York's leading real estate developers, in 2003 UJA-Federation's board endorsed a plan to undertake a gut renovation of the building. The renovation, completed while UJA-Federation's staff remained in occupancy, is a story in itself. In this article, we focus on one particular aspect of that story. Also included are examples of works of art created for UJA-Federation's offices, which address the challenge presented to the artists: give the space its soul.
