Addressing the Needs of All Jews: Working to Build Community

By Roberta Leiner

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Winter 2010

Over the past decade, UJA-Federation of New York's Caring Commission has helped alter the landscape of caring for those in need in Israel and New York. Through 100 highly engaged volunteer lay leaders, supported by a cadre of professional staff, the commission has focused on three priority areas: enhancing the concrete, psychological, and spiritual safety net for our most vulnerable to enable them to achieve dignity, safety, self-sufficiency, and security; enabling individuals and families of underserved populations to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential; and demonstrating the power of community building to strengthen and sustain Jewish life. While retaining its commitment to supporting essential services for our most vulnerable, the Caring Commission has also sought to advance new paradigms of service delivery that strengthen the capacity of the Jewish community as a whole to provide inspired and compassionate care. This has been accomplished through mobilizing volunteers of all ages; locating services in synagogues and day schools; and fostering and incorporating spiritual care into traditional services.
