Moral Development and Tikkun Olam

By Michael Shepard, Sidney Schwarz

Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE), Spring 1999

The authors present and discuss the Jewish Moral Development Grid which they developed and adapted for use in (mostly Orthodox) Jewish day schools. The authors utilize Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of six-stage moral development as a framework for their grid, adding their own seventh level to represent the highest level of moral-religious consciousness. The grid is intended to help traditional Jewish students enrich their understandings of moral complexity and concepts in the Jewish tradition, and eventually to embrace action on behalf of the ideals of justice and mercy for all human beings.
