Editor's Introduction

By Yossi Prager

KTAV Publishing House, Inc., Yeshiva University Press, October 2009

In the introduction to this volume, the editor argues that recent decades have brought about social and economic changes in the Jewish community, Orthodoxy in particular, that have generated a need to revisit issues related to Jewish philanthropy and charity. He writes that the concept of tzedakah as a spiritual expression underpins many of the issues raised in this volume, ultimately arguing that Jews today must focus on achieving two goals through tzedakah: personal, spiritual development of the donor and effective philanthropy toward achievement of concrete goals. He briefly introduces the contributing authors in addition to a short background on five points of discussion: Sociology and History; Orthodoxy and Federations; Halachic Perspectives; Contemporary Philanthropy; and the Role of Rabbi as Fundraiser.
