Orthodox Involvement in Jewish Communal Philanthropy

By Marvin Schick

KTAV Publishing House, Inc., Yeshiva University Press, October 2009

Schick discusses Orthodox involvement in Jewish communal philanthropy, including but not limited to Federations, a topic he argues has acquired a new dimension due to changes in Orthodox life and in the Federation world, particularly within the perameters of the New York Federation. The author argues that there is no halachic, moral, or other obligation to participate in Federation, through voluntary action or voluntary contributions, and that "Israel" and "anti-Semitism," not philanthropy, are the communal spheres of activity in which the Orthodox should emphasize their involvement.
