Learning as a Portal for Synagogue Revitalization

The authors assert that synagogues hold unrealized potential for creating Jewish community and must be reconfigured. They argue that significant and enduring change must meet two criteria: (1) It must focus on the synagogue as a system, rather than on discrete programs within it; (2) rather than simply accepting the congregation's purported goals as given, it must also help its leaders rethink these goals. They suggest beginning a process of change by focusing on Jewish learning. In Jewish Education News vol. 23 no. 2 (Spring 2002).
